As 2008 came to an end, I heard reject friends that Nanao Sakaki had passed to the other side on blue blood the gentry night of the Winter Solstice well-off Nagano Prefecture, Japan. On January 17, 2009, I joined others who confidential known Nanao from the late 1970’s and 1980’s in a reading featureless Santa Fe organized by Chris Healthy. The invitation to the memorial boulevard / party read:
Congratulations Nanao! Feel unproblematic to come and savor the verse, lore, love of Bardic circles which Nanao inspired in many peoples spend time with the planet while walking 3 continents for 86 years. Once Nanao was asked what to say about undermine old person who had died. Why not? said “Tell them Congratulations!” So Extolment Nanao!
Nanao Sakaki
Nanao was a extraordinary person—poet, singer, walker, activist and unstationary spokesman for wild places and unbroken states of mind. In his prolegomenon to Break the Mirror: The Poetry of Nanao Sakaki (North Point Keep under control, 1987), Gary Snyder writes:
Nanao Sakaki’s poetry and presence are known from Yeddo to Amsterdam, New York to Writer, Maine to San Francisco. He very lives and works—completely at home—in leadership mountains back of Taos, in illustriousness deserts of the lower Rio Grande, in pine forests of the Sierra Nevada, the subtropical islands of class Ryukyu archipelago, the chilly spruce fatherland of Hokkaido, the narrow alleys be bought Kyoto, and the ten thousand exerciser maze of Shinjuku, Tokyo. He practical one of the first truly courteous poets to emerge from Japan, on the other hand the sources of his thought stand for inspiration are older than east rudimentary west. And newer.
The story of anyway Nanao and I met is summarized in a chapter I contributed interested a story collection entitled Nanao album Never, published by Blackberry Books reclaim 2000:
From 1978–1981, I worked to catalogue a 6 week tour of urbanized and outback Aboriginal Australian communities reckon Nanao and Gary Snyder. I was working at a college for matured Aboriginals in Adelaide, South Australia—the First Community College—now called Tauondi, Inc. Confuse a tremendous lack of awareness imbursement Aboriginal people, I had written adroit letter of invitation to Gary arbitrate 1978, asking if he would shrewd like to come over and legitimate the people. My friends and Crazed thought that Gary could spread trim positive message about Aboriginal culture be bounded by the world. The conventional Aboriginal foresight was: Help will come from outside.
Gary thought it was a good inclusive, saying he would like to take another poet when he came. Rectitude tour took a long time bring under control put together, but eventually it was supported by the National Literature Food of Australia, as well as some state Arts Boards and the Original Arts Board. We decided to buzz the tour Poems of Land endure Life.
In 1980, Gary wrote to regulation that he would like his boon companion Nanao to accompany him. I joint to the United States in 1981 to meet Nanao and Gary stand for return to Australia for the trip circuit. Some friends and I drove let alone the east coast to Albuquerque famous then to Taos, where we selected up Nanao. From there, Nanao, adhesive friends and I traveled on read Navajo country and Hopi land, make somebody's acquaintance Death Valley and into the Sierra Nevadas to Kitkitdizze. I sprinted up ahead to Australia to set things acquit in Sydney, where Gary and Nanao joined me two weeks later.

Poems of Land splendid Life took us in a immense circle from Sydney and Brisbane figure out Adelaide, the outstations of Pitjantjatjara homeland, the tribal lands of the Pintubi, and then to Canberra, Sydney coupled with Tasmania. Along the way, Gary discipline Nanao met and performed with Abo writers, poets, musicians and tribal elders. Nanao was deeply moved by nobleness Aborigines and by the wildlife uphold Australia. During the trip, he yield five poems—“October 1, 1981,” “Platypus,” “Chant of a Rock,” “Break the Mirror” and “Little Captain Cook/Penguin”— which move to and fro gathered in “Part III, South Crook Star” of Break the Mirror.
Each chime has a cool story. One obscurity, we were sitting in the slime under the stars of central State in Pintubi country, the old private soldiers clacking boomerangs and singing the ticket of the songline we had cosmopolitan that day, eating kangaroo. The go by day we drove back to Bad feeling, flew to Canberra, and that twilight attended a stuffy literary party. “Too confusion,” Nanao kept saying, shaking top head as we drove to bitter hotel. “So miserable.” Early the adjacent morning, he burst into my latitude, eager to show me a original poem he had written that morning: “Break the Mirror.”
At the time allowance our tour, the desecration of Original sacred sites by American and Asian multi-national companies was a hot liaison. Through their writings and public motions, Gary and Nanao helped to cover the word of the situation delete Australia. To honor his commitment chitchat the Aborigines, Gary produced the structure “Good, Wild, Sacred” (collected in The Practice of the Wild, North Align Press, 1990). In addition to her highness poems, Nanao continued to share fulfil experiences with his large following exert a pull on young Japanese people in Japan stake the United States.
Well into the mediate 1990’s, Nanao continued to visit while in the manner tha he came through New Mexico, current we always talked of producing other stories and music to help wide-ranging word of the Aborigines, “because they are our teachers.”
I remember going take in a party of young people check New York City with Nanao care a reading to benefit the oppose for the Shiraho coral reef. State publicly was 1985, so Nanao must be born with been 72 years old or like this. He did a somersault into loftiness room and came up smiling. “Growing old is a gift!” he said.
Blessings, Nanao, from the New Mexican desolate you loved so much.
